In 1911, a mechanical engineer named Masujiro Hashimoto founded a car manufacturing company, Kaishinsha Motor Car Works. The rest would be automotive history.

By 1914, the firm would release its first vehicle, called the DAT. The name, derived from an acronym of the investors' surnames, Den, Aoyama, and Takeuchi, was simple enough. Once the company took the name DAT Motorcar in 1925 and added Datsun passenger trucks to its lineup, however, it would begin to take off.

A merger with Jitsuyo Motors in 1926, creating the DAT Automobile Manufacturing Co., Ltd, would be the start. By 1928, entrepreneur and industrialist Yoshisuke Aikawa would find the holding company Nippon Sangyo, whence the name Nissan would come -- an abbreviation used for the business on the Tokyo stock market. In 1930, Aikawa merged the automobile parts department at Tobata Casting with DAT Motors. This was the true beginning of Nissan as an auto manufacturer.

By 1931, the new company would release its first small car, and today, it's a corporation, Nissan Motor Company -- a Japanese marque that's now one of the largest and most successful producers of cars, trucks, and SUVs in the world. In fact, in 2014, it was the biggest name in North America. With expansion over the years into sports cars, commercial vans, and even electric vehicles (EVs), and the launch of a luxury car division back in 1989, called INFINITI, it's become one of the most well-regarded brands around.
