Across its lifetime, Nissan Maxima has been both a compact car and a full-size sedan. What you've got depends on whether you drive one from between 1981 and 1987 or between 1988 and today. Either way, the fact that it's been around for eight generations -- one every 4 or 5 years or so -- says something.

The car was originally called the Datsun Maxima, and it was one based on the Nissan Bluebird. It easily replaced the earlier Datsun 810, however, because an upscale variant of this model was already sold as the 810 Maxima. Nissan Maxima as a distinct model would appear in 1985, the same year the second generation came out, and a five-door station wagon was offered. The third generation would be redesigned for 1989 and sold with a 4DSC sports car designation. By the fourth generation, in 1995, it'd already be on Ward's 10 Best Engines list, a Motor Trend Import Car of the Year, and a Car and Driver magazine Ten Best.

1997 brought an exterior refresh, and soon after, in 1999, an SE trim would be available with a luxurious Limited Package. The fifth-generation came out in 2000 refreshed and redesigned, quickly becoming a basis for the beloved INFINITI I30. The 2001 model offered a special edition SE commemorating its 20th anniversary, and by 2003, there'd be a special SE package called Titanium Edition.

The 2004 sixth generation was a balance of sport and luxury. The 2009 seventh generation redesign saw premium and technology package offerings galore. 2012 through the eighth generation in 2016 saw a freshened exterior, some new tech options, a few packages, and a stunning Midnight Edition. Today, Maxima is a flagship Nissan sedan. With a 40th Anniversary edition coming out for 2021, one can see why.
