The compact Nissan pickup known as D21, which ran from 1986 to 1997, became today's Nissan Frontier, a mid-size truck designed and built for the hardworking and harder-playing. After the first generation came out in 1997 and 1998, the model would quickly become popular for its options.

Trims would range from S and SV to PRO-4X and four-cylinder and V6 engines that ran on both gas and turbo-diesel would be available, as would two-wheel and four-wheel drivetrains.
