Every driver knows what brakes do. They stop your car, truck, or SUV. Brake pads work by clamping the brake calipers and brake rotors together, which creates friction. Friction is resistance. It's what slows wheels and tires so they can stop eventually. However, the calipers can't create friction without brake pads.
Types of Brake Pads
Depending on the Nissan model you drive, you'll have one of four types:
Organic brake pads are the most common. They're ideal for everyday driving. Better yet, they're easy on rotors and they don't make a lot of dust. Best of all, they're low-priced and reliable.
Ceramic brake pads are more durable. They work in all kinds of weather, they're quieter, and their dust doesn't easily stick to wheels.
Metallic brake pads work even better. They tolerate heat, they feel firmer, and they withstand brake fade.
Carbon fiber brake pads provide the best stopping power. They're the toughest and they work great at very high temperatures. Most cars and trucks use either metallic or organic pads. However, many performance vehicles, especially sports cars, use ceramic or carbon fiber pads. They scatter heat better.
When Should I Replace My Brake Pads?
Usually, every 40,000 to 50,000 miles. However, it can depend on your driving. The best way to figure it out is to look for the signs your brakes are going bad. They include warning lights, damaged pad surfaces, brake whining, and taking longer to stop. The worst symptoms of brake problems, however, are vibration and grinding. Vibrating means your rotors are warping and your brake pads are too worn out. Grinds mean real-time rotor damage. Do an inspection to determine exactly what's going on.
